Spotty Skin

What are these white spots on my newborn’s face?

Your baby is likely to have milia, which is common in newborns. Tiny, white spots appear, usually across the nose, cheeks, chin, forehead or around the eyes. Milia look raised, but if you touch them they will feel smooth. Milia normally appear a couple of weeks after birth because the oil glands on your baby's face are still developing. Your baby’s milia spots should clear up on their own within a month or six weeks.

What about baby acne?

Some babies have a few red spots over their nose and cheeks. These red spots can look a bit angry, similar to teenage acne. Although baby acne can be unsightly, rest assured that it will clear up by itself within about six weeks. Don’t try to get rid of the acne. Just gently clean your baby's skin in the usual way when you top and tail her or bath her. Your baby's acne doesn't bother her in the least, so try not to let it bother you, either.

How can I tell this is not something serious?

There are many completely benign spots, blemishes and birthmarks in newborn babies, and most are nothing to worry about. Milia and spots are harmless, and usually only show on your baby's face and shoulders. More serious spots in newborn babies tend to appear on the body, look more like a red rash and are often accompanied by a fever. Your baby may be more irritable or fussy, too. If you think the bumps on your baby's face are milia or spots, but you're not quite sure, ask your GP, midwife or health visitor.

Why has my baby got spots, and does it bother her?

Just as in adolescence, hormones are the cause. In this case, however, it's your hormones, which are still circulating in your baby's system, that cause the spots. Luckily, your baby's spots are not likely to cause her any discomfort beyond mild itchiness, if that.

How should I treat my baby's spots?

Most babies’ spotty skin will go away by itself. However, if your baby's face is very oily, or the spots seem to be irritating her, gently wash her face a couple of times a day with warm water and pat dry. Don’t touch or squeeze the pimples or apply lotions or creams. The good news is, no matter what you do, the spots will go away within a month to six weeks. https://www.babycentre.co.uk/a72/spotty-skin#ixzz4ggjT9NVi
